Attach a document & work with it in chat
Drop a file into Ask to summarise it, check it claim-by-claim against your knowledge base, answer a questionnaire, or draft from it — all without leaving the conversation.
What this is
The Ask tab isn't just for questions about your library — you can also bring a new document into the conversation. Attach a file, and the chat can summarise it, answer questions about it, check it claim-by-claim against your knowledge base, fill in a questionnaire, or hand you an editable Word draft. It's the same engines that power the Doc review and Questionnaires tabs and the Word/Excel add-ins — just available inline, with no setup and no agent to pick.
Attached files are not added to your Library. A file you attach in chat is read for that conversation only and then discarded. To make a document permanently searchable, upload it under Projects & uploads instead.
How to attach a document
- Go to Ask.
- Click the paperclip to the left of the message box and pick a file (or drag one in).
- A chip with the file name appears above the box. The chip stays for the whole conversation, so follow-up questions keep using the document. Click the × on the chip (or start a New chat) to remove it.
- Action chips appear next to it — pick what you want to do, or just type a question.
Supported file types
| Action | Accepts |
|---|---|
| Ask about it | PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CSV, text, and images (scanned files are OCR'd) |
| Check claim-by-claim | Word (.docx) and PDF |
| Answer these questions | Excel (.xlsx) |
Files up to 50 MB. Very long documents are truncated for the conversational Ask path (the chip shows "first part used"); the claim-by-claim and questionnaire paths read the whole file.
Ask about it
Type any question and send. The answer is grounded in both the attached document and your knowledge base, so you can ask things like:
- "Summarise the obligations in this contract."
- "Does anything here conflict with our data-retention policy?"
- "What's missing compared to our standard DPA?"
When a document is attached, retrieval is seeded by the document's own content
as well as your question — so even a short prompt like "check this" pulls the relevant policies
from your library to compare against. Answers cite your library sources with numbered
[1] [2] citations you can click to verify (see
Search, chat & citations).
Check claim-by-claim
For a Word or PDF document, click Check claim-by-claim. The document is split into individual factual claims, and each one is checked against your knowledge base. You get an inline card where every claim is marked:
- Supported — your knowledge base backs it up.
- Contradicted — a source says otherwise (the conflicting source and page are shown).
- Not in knowledge base — nothing in your library covers it.
- Partially supported — some but not all of the claim is backed up.
Each flagged claim shows the evidence, the source it conflicts with, and a suggested rewording. You can Accept or Reject each claim right in the card, and Download Excel for a shareable record.
It's saved automatically. Every claim-by-claim run is stored under the Doc review tab — with the full claim list, reviewer history, and Excel export — even if you close the chat. Use Open in Doc review on the card to jump there.
Answer these questions (questionnaires)
Attach an Excel questionnaire and click Answer these questions. The chat auto-detects the question column and answers every row from your knowledge base, then shows a question-and-answer table inline with a source count per answer. Click Download filled .xlsx to get the completed file back in its original layout.
This is the same engine as the Questionnaires tab — and the run is saved there too, where you can re-download it or see the full table. Use the tab directly if you need to choose columns manually or manage many runs.
Download any answer as Word
Any answer the chat writes — a summary, a clause, a memo, a draft — has a
Download as Word button beneath it. That gives you an editable
.docx to refine and send, without needing the Word add-in. Ask for what you want
("draft a data-transfer clause grounded in our standards"), then download it.
Chat vs the dedicated tabs & add-ins
| Use… | When |
|---|---|
| Chat (attach a doc) | Quick, one-off work on a single document — the fastest path, no setup. |
| Doc review tab | You manage many verification runs, need the full reviewer dashboard, or want per-run history. |
| Questionnaires tab | You want to choose columns manually, or run/manage large questionnaires repeatedly. |
| Word / Excel add-ins | You're working inside Office and want answers/drafts in-place — see Word & Excel add-ins. |
Troubleshooting
- "Unsupported file type." Claim-by-claim needs .docx or .pdf; questionnaires need .xlsx. For anything else, use Ask about it instead.
- "No text could be extracted." The file may be empty or an image-only scan with no readable text — try a text-based export, or upload it to the Library where OCR runs.
- A long run takes a while. Claim-by-claim and questionnaires read the whole document, so big files take a minute or two. The chat shows a timer, and the result is saved to the Doc review / Questionnaires tab even if you navigate away.
- Answers look thin. The check compares against your knowledge base — if the relevant policies aren't uploaded yet, add them under Projects & uploads and try again.
